TWEED SNEAKERS - HARRISONBURG, VA
You don't understand a single thing about anything until you've heard Tweed Sneakers. You just don't.
Luckily for me, I've been listening to them since I was born. You see, I grew up in home where these guys were played on a constant basis by my father, who saw them play some amount of times. A very blessed person...
(note; this is just what I've heard/read about The Tweed. I'll send ya love forever if you correct me because anything you can offer about them would be greatly appreciated.)
Tweed Sneakers are a band started at some point in the mid-to-late-eighties. The point of the band was to try make some cash to help pay for college. All the members of the band attended JMU and were based out of Harrisonburg, Virginia. I suppose they liked the whole funk, ska, reggae deal too. Whatever. They played fairly often around the college party scene and at other venues in the Virginia Beach area. They released their first album Tweed Sneakers & the Mle Mle Horns in 1988. It was only released as a cassette and as far as I can tell, independently. The tape included four songs "Tweed Sneakers" / "Imperfect Girl" / "Life's A Beach" / "Walk Away". Right from the beginning you get to hear the sweet funk bass skills of Pat "Beist" Weist on "Tweed Sneakers". Its a fairly driving song featuring the distinct vocal style you will come to love by the end of the tape, if not the song. "Imperfect Girl" is where you start to hear the spectacular horn section of the band. I would say this is song is more definitive of The Tweed, but come to your own conclusion. The instrumental breakdown midway through might just blow your mind. The third song is an up-tempo masterpiece, nothing else to say here. The tape ends with the reggae-infused goodness that is "Walk Away".
Fast forward a couple years to 1990. Tweed Sneakers hits you in the face with something better than that old cassette. AKA, a CD. Yes digital? I think so! The production improvement alone is enough to make you want to do some sort of thing. Space Shark is definitely the next step-up for Tweed Sneakers and you'll hear it. I believe it was still released independently, but there seems to be some in-joke about Attack Rats protecting the album (Which is genius if you think about how rats can bite through wires, digital piracy doesn't stand a chance. However, this was 1990 so...). The album starts off with what is quite possibly the best intro ever on "Take a Chance". It's a funky song with some great bass all the way through. "She Won't Dance" is boiling pot of vocal harmony gold. From beginning to end you are pulled in by the upbeat tempo and catchy vocals. "Cloudy Days" gets you with its sweet harmonica and catchy, well-flowing chorus. "L.O.E." (life on earth) is a song about Jesus-freaks. It's catchy and up-tempo. "Space Shark" is an absolute amazing song. The guitar might make you headbang a little and combined with the perfect vocals, perfect lyrics, perfect drums, perfect bass, and perfect horns you'll probably think you're in so some sort of ska heaven.
What happened to the band after those two releases, I don't know. According to a quote in the article from a music magazine called Tempest Tweed Sneakers planned on going full time. For some reason, I doubt that. Had these guys gone full on with the band surely they would have easily been at the top of all those ska bands that were popular in the '90s. Who knows what could have happened?
No really. Does anyone know what happened??
Does anyone know anything about them?
And no, I won't leave you guys without any material.

NOTE: A huge thank you to Craig for scanning the magazine, writing it, and then letting me use it! And a thousand thanks to my father for playing Tweed!
I WILL REMOVE ANY POST AT THE REQUEST OF THE ARTIST.

Cool stuff. I went to JMU and saw these guys live on campus several times. My favorite local band at the time.
ReplyDeleteI've got the debut cassette, but didn't even know about Space Shark. Thanks for sharing.
I went to Washington & Lee University from 1989-1993, and I remember we had these guys play for us once or twice at Sigma Nu. They were just incredible. We were also big fans of Boy O Boy (now Fighting Gravity), so when we first heard Tweed Sneakers, they hit us like a freaking meteor. I recall at the time, they had also opened for 24-7 Spyz, but they just seemed to disappear suddenly after that. Shame, really...these guys were tight.
ReplyDeleteI'm in Melbourne, Florida now, but I grew up in the Midwest. A friend of mine was stationed in the Navy in the Va Beach area and was singing the praises of this little Ska/funk band called Tweed Sneakers. We heard it and we loved it! We then all witnessed the "new ska" revolution that included bands such as Goldfinger, Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake. We all firmly believe that Tweed Sneakers still crushes them all. Your music has been handed down to generations. Goldfinger was a movie with James Bond, but Tweed Sneakers was a great American "Ska Me, Funk Me, Bone Me Drunk Me" ensemble that made more of an impression on those young musicians to follow than they had ever imagined.
ReplyDeletei have an album cover with the lyrics to Im a Spaz, Out on the Prowl, Yeah Yeah, My Baby Lulu, if you want them...
ReplyDeleteThe REAL TWEED SNEAKERS band formed in the early 80's in SAN DIEGO. They were a highly popular NEW WAVE trio. They held both copyright and trademark on the name TWEED SNEAKERS, I know because I discovered them and managed the band. The 4 song 12 " EP was the record mentioned above. TWEED SNEAKERS was FREDDY LAHMAN, JON BOEHNER & JACK "SKIPPY" WRIDE. They were the first, the best and a truly original musical phenomenon. Signed Dana, Sound Advice.
ReplyDeleteSaw them at the bacchanal
DeleteI saw the Tweed Sneakers perform at SDSU open air amphitheater. It was likely in the 1980s. I think they were the opening band for Warren Zevon.
Deletethat guy in the front is my band teacher! his name is anthony greene!
ReplyDeleteAn excellent sax player!
DeleteThanks for the post. This is the bass player, Pat, from the East coast Tweed Sneakers. We were going to head out full time on the road after four of us graduated from James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA in December of 1990. We had a major communication breakdown and so I just simply prayed to God about what to do and woke up the next morning and knew I had to move on. The horn players both quit with me. I think we had about 45 gigs lined up and so Randy had to cancel everything and sell all our equipment. Great times!!!
ReplyDeleteI was dating a girl at the the time and we’ve been married now for 27 years and have been blessed with three kids now 23, 21 and 19. Praise God!

Fantastic band, great show live. Caught them playing at UVA (late 80's) and once at Fat Tuesdays across from GMU in Northern VA. Went to HS with Rob (lead singer). At the time I left he was just starting a band (Fall 1984). Cool to see them play, unfortunate that they didn't move forward. They, and the Flip, are the reason I bought the CD "Ska Gone South". Can't find a "Space Shark" CD yet.
ReplyDeleteLook on Apple Music, Spotify, etc…
DeleteHey there- my brother was the led singer and song writer, Rob Moulthrop. I remember all the great music and have all his tapes from early on and after - he moved to Nashville but was misdirected to not play out and just write - I know if he would have gone out and did his thing like he always had done in the past he would ha
ReplyDelete(Adding on to the text above…please forgive typos!) he would have done exceptionally well. He now lives in Maryland and just got married - maybe he’ll get back in the grove of things and we’ll hear something amazing- man that would be great!!
ReplyDeleteIsn’t Rob a liquor distributor now or he was?
DeleteSaw them a couple times at The Balcony in Blacksburg, VA. Great memories of fun times watching them perform. Had a tape, but it got borrowed and never returned.
ReplyDeleteSearch any of the digital music streaming platforms for the East Coast Tweed Sneakers music.
ReplyDeleteLived next to them on Mountain View drive. Saw them all over . Mystic den, UVA, bayou in gtown
ReplyDeleteTweed Sneakers had 3 songs (Lets Fly Away, Out on the Prowl and Thunder Lane) featured in the sound track for a movie called Terminal Entry, which was released in 1987 and starred Yaphet Koto and the jock Veronica shoots in Heather's.
